History

Left: Death Valley, July 1980; Prototype "coil sprung" 110" Land Rover's under going hot weather tests. Based at the Furnace Creek Inn Land Rover UK Ltd., had shipped over two LWB Wagons (1 with a V8, 1 with a 2.5L petrol), a LWB TruckCab (2.5L Diesel) and a Range Rover with rooftop A/C. Joe Valdez of JRT Inc was the USA man, who invited me to come down.
See my Series III in the station filling up?

The LR UK employees had a hard time with the heat… Jaguar-Rover-Triumph's Jim Valdez and Mike Green had little trouble… but all were forbidden from off-roading due to the heat! During testing one day, temperatures exceeded 135-f in the cab!

Left: May 1984, New Land Rover "NINETY"…  as it was called.  "Defender" came post '89. Company car # A842KRW was a 2.5L Petrol with 5-speed gearbox and full-time transfer case.

Left: Coil sprung Station Wagon (HWK442V) with 110" wheelbase. This is the 2.5-litre petrol vehicle (note NJ manufacturer plate under UK plate). This LR has NO A/C fitted, unlike the V8 Wagon, #HWK439V.

Left: Four years later (1984) Michael Green would be at Solihull driving this "ONE-TEN" V8 Wagon around the test course.
In May 1984 Michael Green would travel to England where he'd drive the then new "ONE-TEN" (as it was called) at the Solihull test track… but this wasn't his first time in a ONE-TEN, as he'd been in Death Valley in July 1980 with the new coil sprung LWB test cars! Days later he'd drive the new, soon to be introduced, "NINETY". Though new, the SWB still lacked a V8, it was a treat to drive, but it was no GOLDEN ROD!
